En las pechinas de la Iglesia de San Juan Bautista ó del Real se conserva una de las magníficas series de los Padres de la Iglesia, que Goya pintó en su juventud:

Goya decoró las pechinas de la cúpula que cubre el crucero de la iglesia de San Juan Bautista hacia 1766, con la serie "Los Padres de la iglesia".

Esta es una iconografía que Goya utiliza por primera vez en este templo bilbilitano, aunque posteriormente la retomará en Muel y Remolinos con algunas variaciones. Se trata de una obra de juventud, cuya tonalidad pálida recuerda al rococó italiano.

Descripción del edificio

La iglesia de San Juan Bautista pertenece al antiguo seminario de los Jesuitas. Su portada, en piedra, está fechada en 1534, aunque el edificio es posterior. La fachada y la estructura exterior recuerdan a la iglesia de Santiago, de Zaragoza.

Se trata de un edificio de una sola nave, con crucero marcado y cabecera plana, encontrándose el trigorio cubierto con bóveda de lunetos. Posee capillas laterales entre los contrafuertes. La cabecera se cubre con boveda de cañón, decorada con una gran concha, y el crucero con una cúpula sobre pechinas, con linterna y ventanas en el intradós. Exteriormente, la cúpula se cubre con tejas polícromas.

La torre es de planta cuadrada en sus cuerpos inferiores, que pasa a octogonal en el superior, y se remata con un capitel bulboso de pizarra.

El interior fue decorado a mediados del siglo S.XVIII, con pilastras con capitel compuesto, mostrando las claves de la nave medallones con figuras de ángeles, y el testero medallones con santos. Merecen citarse el Retablo Mayor, y los de San Francisco Javier, la Inmaculada y el Santo Cristo.
